A little village in the state of Andhra Pradesh, around 10 km from the city of Guntur is the Uppalpadu village, which is famous for the Uppalapadu Bird Sanctuary. The bird sanctuary here is a well-known hub of various local birds. Many others migrate from as far off as Australia and Siberia to this water body for nestling.

This is the home of about 7000 birds of various species, amongst which spot-billed pelican is the  centre of attraction for bird lovers.Besides, there are painted storks, pintail ducks, red crested pochards, common teals, ibises, common coot etc. that throng this place, making a fantastic sight for bird watchers.

The sanctuary at Uppalapadu is a popular destination of tourists from various parts of the world, not only due to the variety that is seen in the avian population here but also because of the inherent scenic beauty of the place.

Travel Tips

The best time to visit the bird sanctuary at Uppalapadu is between October and March. The temperature is quite comfortable during this period, and you can explore the location all day long. Summers are quite uncomfortable and should be avoided. Make sure you carry a good camera with you to take interesting photographs of the avian members.

Things To Do

The bird sanctuary at Uppalapadu is part of the village here. The refuge is located just after you enter the town. Various birds travel to this sanctuary from places as far off as Siberia and Australia. The trees here are favorite nesting hubs of a large variety of migratory birds. Bird watching is the best thing to do here. Some of the exotic birds that you can see here are Painted Storks and Spot-billed Pelicans. Both these species of birds have been declared as belonging to the endangered species. The village of Uppalpadu has several water tanks, and these tanks are a great attraction for the birds as they flock around these in large numbers. It is estimated that around 7000 birds can be seen in this region. Pintail ducks, red-crested pochard, black-headed ibises, cormorants, common coot, common teal, stilts are some of the other birds that you can see in this region. The park is most famous for its collection of pelicans. These endangered birds form a large part of the parks avian life form. In all, there are estimated to be around 1500 pelicans in the bird sanctuary at Uppalpadu. Clicking innumerable photographs of these beautiful birds is another thing you would enjoy apart from bird watching. The sanctuary is open from 6AM – 6PM.

Getting Around

The bird sanctuary is located close to Guntur town and thus once you reach at Guntur, you can comfortably reach the bird sanctuary at Uppalapadu. Due to the nearness of a big city, public transports are quite readily available. There are quite a few buses which ply in this region. Buses are both government-run as well as privately operated. You can also hire a car from any of the local car rental services to take you around the place. The charges can be both on an hourly basis, or the distance travelled.

How To Reach


If you prefer to travel by plane, the nearest airport is at Hyderabad. From there, you can either take a taxi or a bus to cover the remaining portion of the journey. Cars for hire are readily available just outside the airport. The drive will take around 4 to 5.5 hours.


The nearest famous railway station is at Guntur. The rail station at Guntur is connected to all the major stations in India. From the station take a taxi or hired cars to reach Uppalapadu Bird Sanctuary in 30-40 minutes.


The bird sanctuary is quite well connected by road. There are direct bus routes between Guntur and Uppalpadu Bird Sanctuary. You can get on a bus from any of the notable towns or cities and take a bus which will take you directly to Guntur. From there, you can take a cab to the bird sanctuary. Alternatively, you can also rent a taxi or a car for the trip and you will reach the sanctuary within an hour.

Surrounding Attractions

The places near Uppalapadu Bird Sanctuary hold many areas of tourist attraction. Undavalli Caves is a series of beautiful caves that are known for their beauty. Prakasam Barrage is also quite close. This huge dam on the river attracts tourists from many surrounding locations. Venkateswara Swami Temple is a famous religious site and attracts devotees from many of the adjacent parts.
