Taki is a border town in the bank of Ichhamati River. It is a town in North 24 Pargana District of West Bengal, India. Across the river lies Bangladesh. The river is the chief attraction of the place. Every year people from both sides of the river, Indians and Bangladeshis, meet on the Ichhamati to celebrate the Durga idol immersing ritual on the last day of the Durga Puja.
Carry your identity cards as it is an international border and do not loiter around at ate evening.
Do not plan the Golpatar jungle and Machranga Island during rains.
Winter is the best season to visit Taki and if you are specially visiting for the Durga immersion ceremony, please make prior bookings.
Things to do
River cruising is the most amazing thing to do here at Taki. You can even hire private ferries. Watching sunset from the ferry is a beautiful experience. Visit Machranga or Kingfisher Island, which is an almost uninhabited islet (129 acres) at the confluence of Ichhamati and Bhasa Rivers. Bird watchers will enjoy the island filled with coastal forest birds and it’s a popular picnic spot for activities like swimming, sweet water fishing and hiking on the pristine coast and then into the forests. You can have a view of Bangladesh. Rs.5 per head is charged as an entry fee. High tide is the time to visit the island.
Walk and/or sit at the banks of Ichhamati at Taki which is very well decorated and you can enjoy watching sunrise or sunset from here.
Golpatar Jungle or Mini Sunderbanprovides a short trail under the canopy of trees, leading to the river. It’s a pleasant walk. Entry fee of Rs.5 is charged and original identity card is to be carried.
Look out for the ruins of the ancestral house of former Army General Shankar Roychowdhury, the Roychoudhury’sZamindarhouse and the Ghosh Zaminder Bari with some old temples in the premises.There is a shiv linga placed in the ruins of the temple of Ghosh Bari for shooting purpose. Kaushik Ganguly’sNational Award winning movie, ‘Bishorjor’ was shot at Taki.
You may spend the evening watching Sandhya (evening) aarti at Rama Krishna Mission and/or KuleswariKalibari.
Rickshaws can be hired for getting around. The ferry is used for touring on river.
Bengali food with fresh water fish is available. Sweets (Malpoa) and fritters (tele bhaja) can be tried.Fuchkas near Rama Krishna Mission High School is popular. In the winters do buy the freshly made jaggery.
Nearest Railway Station:Avail rickshaws from Taki Road Station to reach the river front guest houses and/or hotels. There are numerous SealdahHasnabad locals, taking around 2.5 hours to reach.
On road service:It takes 3hours to reach Taki (almost 70kms) via BasantiHigway (Kolkata Malancha Road) and then left from Malancha on BasirhatMalancha Road and then finally viaTaki Road.
There are buses from Esplanade, Science City and Shyam Bazar travelling via Barasat and Basirhat to Hasnabad. These buses stop at Taki
You can take boat rides to areas of Sundarbans from the Machrangaisland.
