Brief

Tajpur, a fishing village on the shore of Bay of Bengal, along the Digha-Contai Road, located in the Purba (East) Medinipur District of the state of West Bengal, is fast gaining popularity among tourists. If you plan a weekend at the beach with the idea of being far from the madding crowd, do visit Tajpur. It is relatively a new tourist spot as compared to Digha and Mandarmani and is a hidden gem.

Things to do

Soak into the solitude of the secluded beach carpeted with red crabs and rolling waves of the Bay of Bengal dotted with a few fishing boats. There is dense vegetation ofjhow, casuarina and tamarisk trees around. Enjoy the tranquillity of the shore at sunset or sunrise.
There are few stalls on the beach selling tea. If you are lucky you may have the opportunity to ask them to fry their fresh catch for you to eat. Try the fresh fish fries and/or crabs.
Walk or take a toto or van ricksaw till theMohana or Delta, an isolated place where the river meets the sea.

Getting Around

Roaming around the beach can be done on foot. Van ricksaws and totos are available if required. The resorts arrange for vehicles if requested for.

Kolkata based Indian and Chinese cuisines are available in the hotels and resorts. There are no special delicacies as such. However, try out Hilsa, prawns and/or crabs.

    Nearest Railway Station:Digha, 17kms away from Tajpur is the nearest railway stations with cabs and buses available for Mandarmani.

  • Bus

    On road service:It takes approximately 4-4.5 hours to drive 173kms (Kolkata to Tajpur) on the Kolkata-Digha Route (NH16 and NH116B) via Kolkaghat where you should stop for refreshment. Lunch at Sher-e-Punjab is pretty much a ritual. There are private and State transport buses that can be availed from Howrah, GolparkGariahat, Garia and Esplanade at reasonable fares (Rs.140 and above).Get down at Balisai(between Contai and Digha)from where local cabs and toto rickshaws are available for Tajpur.

Surrounding Attractions

Mandarmani, Udaipur and Shankarpur are adjacent sea side villages which can be visited from Tajpur.
Digha, the most popular sea beach destination of West Bengal is also 17kms away.
