High up in the north-west corner of Arunachal Pradesh that juts into Bhutan, and shouldered by China (Tibet), Tawang is a town situated at an elevation of over 3000 ft. is in the district of West Kamang under the state Arunachal Pradesh. It’s a part of the Tibet Autonomous Region and is considered as a Chinese town.

Tawang has become one of the popular hideouts for the seclusion loving tourists in recent times. This 10,000 feet altitude hillock is full of natural belongings which is attracting the sense of all. You can also catch a glimpse of birds, snow leopards, must and barking deer, etc. Monpa people are dominating this township from the ancient times.

 In winter there is much less rainfall in Tawang than in summer. Tawang receives snowfall every year during December – January. There is also a ski lift in town. Most of the travel from the plains is on a steep hill road journey. Tourist can travel Tawang from Tezpur, Assam by road and Tezpur has direct flights from Kolkata.

Travel Tips

March to September is the ideal time to make a trip to Tawang. Summers are pleasant and monsoon is also relatively enjoyable with showers and bright green natural charm, but winter is quite chilling. Inner Line Permit is required for domestic travellers. International travellers are requested to acquire Restricted Area Permit from Ministry of External affairs before entering in this state Heavy woollen clothes with adequate warm accessories are must during all the time. Keep rainproof attire during monsoon season. Do not litter the place by depositing plastic and any garbage. Keep emergency medicines and a first aid kit along with you. Make a dig to the delicacies available in this place. One must purchase local handicrafts from local markets. Avoid taking elderly people who are not fit for the long road journey.

The best thing to do during the visit is nature walk around the region. Those who are interested to know the cultures and languages of local people can take a course from any friendly people. You can also visit the popular Tawang Monastery, Tipi Orchid Sanctuary or just enjoy the essence and beauty of the nature. Local cuisines such as Zan, a local pan cake or the local biriyani, Gyapa Khazi along with local wine should be a must try for those who desire to add an experience about this place. Momo, thukpa, soups are also available in this region.

Getting Around

Walking is the best way to explore the region in an intrigued way, if you wish to see the surroundings. Alternatively, a Sumo or a rented car can also be taken for sightseeing.

How To Reach


There are no airports directly connecting this town. The nearby airport is at Tezpur, Salonibari airport which is 319km away and is in neighbouring state Assam. There are flights of Indian airlines connecting this airport with other major metro cities of India. You can take Sumo or other private cars to reach Tawang and it takes around 6 hours to reach the town. You may also take a flight to Guwahati International airport which is around 480 km from Tawang, and from there you may avail private cars to reach Tawang with stop overs at Bomdila and Tezpur.


There is no rail station at Tawang. Train service is up to Rangapara and Tezpur which has rail heads connecting with other major cities of Assam. Assam is completely connected with other parts of India on daily basis.


There are regular public bus services and hired cars available from Bomdila and Tezpur. Tourists can take ASTC buses from Itanagar also. There are rental cars available from Guwahati to take tourists at the destination also. However, the journey takes a long time due to rough roads but you can enjoy the beautiful scenery.

The Tawang Valley is known for its largest Buddhist Monastery outside Lhasa, Tibet. Tawang Monastery, located in the Tawang city and is the largest monastery in India and second largest in the world after the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet. Tawang Monastery is one of the holy places for these religion followers because sixth Dalai Lama was born in this place. Neatly crafted villages of Monpa people are true delight. Their beliefs, culture and food style is completely unique and different than other parts of the country. Deep in the forest of Tawang you may visit to watch the spectacular Nuranang Falls. 164 km from Tawang is the Gorichen Peak, the highest peak of Arunachal Pradesh with an elevation of 22,500 feet. Located in between Tawang and West Kemeng, the peak is not only majestic, but ideal for trekking also. There are lakes named PankangTeng Tso, Sangetser Lake, Madhuri lake, Banggachang Lake. Other parts of the state such as Bomdila can be visited from this township also.
