Located in the southern part of the state of Sikkim, Ravangla is a quaint little town in the laps of the Menam Hill in Eastern Himalayas. 65 km away from the state capital Gangtok, Ravangla or Rawangla as commonly called is a perfect spot to let yourself loose from the hustle bustle of the city and spend your holidays.

The town has become one of the upcoming tourist spots in the state of Sikkim and is known for its scenic beauty and the great view of the Himalayan range that one can get from here. Located at an altitude of around 8000 ft. from the sea level, this little town of Ravangla lies in between the two major tourist spots of Sikkim- Gangtok, and Pelling and lies in between Maenam and Tendong Hill. It is well connected by the state highways to other major towns of the state. Ravangla is also the starting point of a trek to Maenam La Wildlife Sanctuary.

With rich and exotic flora and fauna, natural beauty, snow covered peaks of Kanchenjunga, waterfalls green tea gardens, old monasteries, cool ambience, Ravangla is a spot worth visiting.

Travel Tips

Although the weather remains pleasant all throughout the year, except winter, the best time to visit Ravangla is during the summer season. The weather is moderate and pleasant around this time. Carry light clothes who are visiting in summer. In winter the temperature is quite low and can drop below zero degree. The months of August, September and October also attract substantial tourists, as Ravangla is at its best during this time and you can experience the Pang Lhabsol festival.

The terrain is dotted with alpine vegetation and a large number of flowers of different colours. If you are tired of seeing the city landscape, Ravangla is sure to be like a breath of fresh air to you. The place is known for its orchids and rhododendrons. If you are a bird-watcher, Ravangla is sure to mesmerize you with various species of migratory birds. A perfect place for taking short trekking up the hills, Ravangla encompasses green forests that don a spectacular view. Further, famous for ethnic festivals like crafts festivals,Pang Lhabsol in the months of August and September complemented with Cham dance is sure to captivate your sights and souls. The Ralang Monastery is a noted Buddhist monastery in the region. It is located at a distance of six kilometers from the town of Ravangla. From Ravangla you will also get clear views of some of the famous Himalayan peaks, like Mt. Kanchenjunga, Mt. Kabru, Mt. Pandim, and Mt. Sinialchu. The local cuisine of Ravangla includes Gya Thuk or Thukpam, Phagshapa, Momo along with Churpi, Ningro are sure to tickle your taste buds. Chaang is a popular drink of the place.

Getting Around

The best way to get around Ravangla is by private cars or hired taxis. You will not find public transports. However, you can hire motorbikes from the local people. Bicycle is also rented and is one of the popular ways of commuting around the region.

How To Reach


If you prefer to travel by plane, the nearest airport is at Bagdogra in Siliguri, which is around 130 km from Ravangla. From there, you can either take a taxi or a bus to cover the remaining portion of the journey and it takes around 4-5 hours. Cars for hire are easily available just outside the airport.


The nearest important railway station is at New Jalpaiguri at a distance of app. 120km and is covered in 4 hours. The rail station at Jalpaiguri is connected to Delhi and Kolkata, and via them to the other stations across the country.


There are direct car routes between Gangtok and Ravangla, distance being around 70 km. and takes 3-4 hours to reach. You can get up on a bus, taxi or jeep or Sumo from any of the nearby important towns which will take you directly to the hill station here. You can also get to Ravanglafrom Siliguri. It is just five hours drive. Direct routes are not available but you can easily do break journey. Alternatively, you can reach Ravangla from Namchi, which is around 25 km and takes 1-2 hours.

Surrounding Attractions

There are plenty of other beautiful places that you can explore around Ravangla. Borong is a nearby village which can be reached by trekking. The village offers a great view of the Himalayas. Temi Tea Estate is the famous and a beautiful tea garden in the region. It is the only tea garden in Sikkim. Tashiding Monastery is another popular tourist spot. The monastery was built in 1716 and is about 40 km from Ravangla. If you are up to for an adventure, you may head over to Ralong Hot Water Springs, which is around 1 hour walking from the main town of Ravangla. It is a famous spring and is believed to be a natural healer of pains. Situated at an altitude of 6700 ft., the Rayong Sunrise Viewpoint provides a stunning view of the Chola and Sangalaila Mountain ranges.
