Ooty or Udagamandalam is the preferred outing for most of the tourists across the country, especially during the summer season.  This small township of Nilgiri Mountain is situated under Nilgiri district of Indian state Tamil Nadu. Lying amid the Nilgiri Hills with an altitude of 2240 m above the sea level, Ooty is thronged by tourists all round the year because of its favourable climate.

Todas kept this place bounded for ages before the boundary is demolished by East India Company in the late 18th century. Known as the Queen of Hills, Ooty was once the summer capital of the British. This unique diverse land of the mountain is covered by tea and coffee plantation introduced during the British era.

Ooty can be visited all throughout the year; however of March to June is the best time to visit Ooty. These months constitute the summer season in Ooty. The weather during this time period is generally pleasant as you can venture out for a day sightseeing. If you enjoy the rain you may also try out during the monsoon season because of the freshly washed landscapes and the unique aroma of the earth, and of course the lush greenery. Things To Do

There is a heritage mountain railway named Nilgiri Mountain which can provide ample view of the hill and its surroundings. Boating, horse riding, cycling is available to keep the tourists busy during their stay also. Trekkers can take a journey up to the Dodabetta peak with the help of a guide to enjoy the view of the city from the top also. A visit to the Botanical garden can increase the knowledge about the plant families in an enriching way. There is a Golf course where golf lovers can give a try also. The Rose Garden is a small terrace atop of hill off Etieness Road. The season to be here is April when more than a thousand varieties are in bloom. A British hill station would be incomplete without its Churches and so visit the St. Stephens Church, which is the oldest here. Wenlock Downs and the Ninth Mile is Ooty’s nost famous picnic spot and deservedly so. Located 17km from Ooty on the way to Pykara Falls. People simply walk around drinking in the beauty and the mist. The Nilgiri Toy train on the narrow gauge promises a scenic hilly ride and a wonderful experience and so a ride in the toy train is a must. The Dodda Betta is the highest peak in the area, located at the juncture of the Western and Eastern Ghats. The beautiful ‘Chhaiya Chhaiya’ song featuring Sharukh Khan and Malaika Arora was shot in the Nilgiri Mountain Railways.

Getting Around

Walks and rides around the hills are probably the best way to enjoy a holiday here. For driving around town and its environs, most hotels will arrange taxis for full day. Cycles and bikes are available on rent per hour basis for those who want two wheelers as their option to getting around the region. There are hired cars and rickshaws to take the tourists at the most popular points also.

How To Reach

FLIGHT

Ooty does not have its own airport. Tourists can come via the nearest one which is present at Coimbatore at a distance of 88km. Time taken to reach the town of Ooty is around 3 hours from the airport. There are regular domestic flights available to reach this place via New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Bangalore. Bangalore airport is around 310 km by road. Coimbatore and Tiruppur are the 2 nearest stations, which have connectivity to Mettupalayam from where you can get Ooty Toy Train which is an exclusive train service from Mettupalayam to Ooty and few other minor stations. Coimbatore is also very well connected to all the other major cities of parts of the country.

TRAIN

Ooty does not have its own rail head either. A small railway station is at Mettupalyam which is 40km away only. Trains of Indian Railway connect this part with other major cities of India like Mumbai, New Delhi on regular basis. Private buses and hired cabs are available from the station. Coimbatore and Tiruppur are the two nearest stations, which have connectivity to Mettupalayam from where you can get Ooty Toy Train an exclusive and enjoying train journey connecting Mettupalayam to Ooty.

ROAD

All through southern Indian major cities are connected by motorable roads in a good way. Ooty is just 19 km from Coonoor, 52 km from Mettupalayam, around 90 km from Coimbatore, 105 km from Tiruppur, 128 km from Pollachi etc. and as such all through southern Indian major cities are connected by motorable roads in a good way. People can by public buses or hired cars from several parts of the southern India easily. Overnight public coaches are available on daily basis from Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Mumbai.

There is immense range of options to do and visit surrounding the township. Rose garden, Botanical garden, Nilgiri toy train, Ooty Lake, Stone house, Toda huts, St.Stephen’s Church, Deer park, tribal museum are present to keep the tourists busy during their stay at this place. Further, you may visit Mudumalai wild life Sanctuary, the habitat of, leopards, elephants, wild dogs, sambar, spotted dear etc and variety of birds. Try out trekking at Kotagiri, adventurous camping at tea gardens. Bird watching is yet another activity you may enjoy at Ooty.
