Haflong or the ‘Ant Hill’ as the name means is the only hill station located in the state of Assam. Haflong is a town and headquarters of Dima Hasao in India in the state of Assam The picturesque town lies in the lap of the Eastern Himalayas. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the north-eastern states known for its undulating plains covered by lush green vegetation, and rises to a height of around 680 m = 2230 ft.app. above the sea level. While the mountains form an integral part of the beautiful landscape of Haflong, the terrain is also decorated by a number of beautiful flowering pants. Located at a distance of around 310 km from Guwahati, Haflong is a place rich in wildlife, hillocks and serene atmosphere. With a variety of exotic birds, this popular destination is a perfect holiday spot for tourists.

Travel Tips

The best time to visit Haflong is in between October and February as this is the excellent time to experience the beauty of the hills. The summer time, ranging from April to June is normally hot and humid and so is not advisable to visit; while during monsoon season i.e. during June to September the place turns lush green and charming and so one may visit during this time, too.

Things To Do

Haflong is the only hill station in the state of Assam. As such, there are a number of amazing locales that the place offers to the visiting people who travels from different parts of the world. The curving rivers that flow down the mountainous terrains, the bluish mountain peaks in the distance, and the orchids of various colours that grow in the mountain slopes, all these make Haflong an exquisite sight to behold. If you are an adventure-sports buff, Haflong should definitely feature on your list of places to visit. The space provides several modes of adventure sports, like paragliding, and trekking. The Haflong Lake, situated at the heart of the town is also one of the places to visit. It is the largest water body in the state of Assam. There are several orchards around the place that you can make a trip to. These are also very good places to get acquainted with local cultures and traditions. Borail Range is quite nearby and is well-known for its forest covered terrain. Another interesting place is Jatinga. The place is of great interest to the tourists due to the mysterious birds of the same name which fly from an unknown place to this region to commit suicide. Mailbong, the former capital of this region is also a place of tourist interest. Moulpong is a nearby view point from which you can get a beautiful view of the town and the adjacent areas.

Getting Around

The public transport system in Haflong is not very reliable. You should arrange well for private modes of transportations. There are cars for hire that can be availed quite easily. Buses ply on the area however their frequency is quite erratic.

How To Reach

FLIGHT

Guwahati Airport is the most important airport in the region, which is connected to various parts of the country. The other airports around the place are at Silchar and Dimapur. From the airport, you can reach Haflong by taxi or hired car. From Silchar it about two and a half hours by cab and from Dimapur it’s more than 10 hour journey by car. You may also take a flight to Shillong and then reach Haflong from there.

TRAIN

The nearest important railway station is at Guwahati in Assam. From the station, Haflong is about 3 km. The distance can be covered by bus or taxi. You can also take a connecting train from Guwahati to Haflong Station. Alternatively, you may also avail Jan Shatabdi Express from Guwahati to Lanka and then hire a taxi from Lanka to reach Haflong.

ROAD

The roads are well developed and connected to the other cities in the north-eastern part of the country. There are several buses which leave regularly for Haflong from all nearby important towns and cities. You can get a bus from Dimapur, Diphu, Guwahati, and Jorhat. However, the bus journey might prove to be quite hazardous for those who are not accustomed to bus journeys on mountain roads.

Sri SriKanchaKanti Devi Temple is quite nearby. The temple is a popular destination amongst the tourists and is one of the holy spots around here. You can also go to Bhubaneswar Temple in Bhuban Hills in Silchar. Maniharan Tunnel is a nearby tunnel which is of great religious importance as well as tourist attraction. The state capital city of Guwahati is 7 hours drive away. You can also visit the famous Kamakhya and Umananda temples. Further, the Orchid Garden, Borail Range, Maibong and Jatinga are some of the other attractions that should not be missed along with the Assam State Zoo. Haflong Lake, a popular tourist spot is a large water body situated very close by.
