Bhandardara is one of the quiet beautiful getaways of Maharashtra state from the hustle bustle of Mumbai, located on top of the Sahyadri hills. A holiday destination near Igatpuri on the banks of river Pravara, Bhandrdara is situated in the Western Ghats of India in the state of Maharashtra, not very far off from Mumbai.

During the monsoons, the view becomes enchanting as the whole region is painted green, visit here to witness this sheer beauty of the place. The recent attraction in this place is Fireflies camp in Purushwadi area. There are a number of historic and natural places of interest near the dam.

Bhandardara is home to Mount Kalsubai, the highest peak in Maharashtra, reaching a height of around 5400 feet. Bhandardara is also famous for trekking and hiking.

With bountiful nature and cool climate Bhandardara is also a popular stop off for visitors who are travelling to Nashik or Shirdi.

Though summer is the peak season for tourists, the best time to visit Bhandardara is in the monsoons or winters when the climate is cool and breezy as opposed to the summers when the climate is particularly hot and humid. Hence, the months between June till September tend to be an ideal time to visit Bhandardara. Monsoon visit can provide the beauty of greenery under the splash of showers. Cotton clothes are must during summer time. Do not litter the place by depositing plastic and any garbage. Keep emergency medicines and a first aid kit along with you. Try out the Maharashtrian thali, though you will get North Indian or South Indian foods also.

Things To Do

Trekking lovers can enjoy their thirst of trekking by reaching at the top spots of Bhandaradara. Boating is available in the lake along with angling, where large fish are available. Standing as tall as 1646m, Mount Kalsubai is the highest peak of Maharashtra. With splendid view, the hill is also popular for trekking. You can visit Wilson Dam, the oldest dam, built in 1910 on river Pravara at a height of 150 m. Arthur Lake, a calm lake surrounded by green forests is worth visiting. Make a visit to Randha Falls, where the river Pravara falls down from a height of 170 feet, making the view breath taking. Another attraction is Ratnagad Fort which has captivating views.

Getting Around

Best way to getting around the region is by walking. Hired cars and state transport buses are available to take the tourists at nearby places.

How To Reach

FLIGHT

The nearest airport is at Nashik, which is around 90km from Bhandardara. Hire private cars or taxis to reach the hill station. The Mumbai International Airport is 177 km away. There are regular flights connecting to major metro cities. Taxis can be hired from the airport to reach Bhandardara.

TRAIN

There is no direct train line connecting this area. Igatpuri has a railway station which is closest to the place and is at a distance of 45 km. It is connected by trains on regular basis. State buses, private taxi and autos are available outside the station to reach the place.

ROAD

There are public and private buses available to take tourists at this place from Mumbai. Hired cars are available also. From Mumbai, you must take NH3. Reach Ghoti toll post and take left turn to reach 30 km away Bhandardara. You can also travel from Pune, which is 175 km from Bhandardara; you should take NH 50 up to Ghargaon and then avail Satte Highway 21 to reach Bhandardara.

This nature’s beauty can be the best place to remove all the sorrows of human lives. Wilson dam, Arthur Lake, Mount Kalsubai, Agasti Rishi Ashram, Ratangadh fort are the attractions keeping busy the tourists during their stay. Ghatghar is a viewpoint which is 22 km from the hilly town. Another tourist spot is Sandhan valley, situated 22 km from the town. Nashik, Shirdi and Trimbekeshwar are three other popular destinations surrounding the region. They are 70 km, 90 km and 30 km away respectively and you can visit these places from Bhandardara.
