General Post Office is the central post office and the major of the city of Kolkata. All mails including inbound and outbound are managed by this General Post Office. This is the essential structure of the town and stands as the landmarks of the city. The site where this infrastructure stands was the first site of Fort William. The alley beside the PO was believed to have been the site of the guardhouse of the infamous Calcutta Blackhole. Located in the busy area of BBD Bag, the attractive feature of the GPO is its towering Ionic-Corinthian pillars.
The construction of the building was started in 1864, and it was completed in 1968. The famous architect was Walter B. Grenville. The building is notable for its imposing high domed roof and tall Iconic-corinthian pillars.
