General Post Office

Why To Go

General Post Office is the central post office and the major of the city of Kolkata. All mails including inbound and outbound are managed by this General Post Office. This is the essential structure of the town and stands as the landmarks of the city. The site where this infrastructure stands was the first site of Fort William. The alley beside the PO was believed to have been the site of the guardhouse of the infamous Calcutta Blackhole. Located in the busy area of BBD Bag, the attractive feature of the GPO is its  towering Ionic-Corinthian pillars.

The construction of the building was started in 1864, and it was completed in 1968. The famous architect was Walter B. Grenville. The building is notable for its imposing high domed roof and tall Iconic-corinthian pillars.

The city is congested with a lot of traffic. There are public transports that carry you to the destination: public buses, taxis. Auto rickshaw or any other mode of public transport can take you to GPO during the day. The roads here are well connected. There is a need to carry an umbrella, and wearing cotton cloth during summer will help you have a comfortable journey. The patchy weather is unbearable sometimes. The massive structure is notable for its domed roof and has iconic tall Corinthian pillars. This is located on the Netaji Subhas Road. There is a postal Museum inside the colossal building. This building houses the museum, which is noted for the collection of stamps and artifacts. This building is of great historical importance. The modern-day importance is nevertheless. Built during the time of British reign, this massive building has a lot to offer starting from the view of its large structure to that of the collection of stamps from all over the world and India of several years.

Howrah Railway Station and Benoy Badal Dinesh Railway Station are the very nearby railway station to Calcutta GPO. However, Sealdah Rail station is also not very far away.
